Good morning from R&B Rhyne Farms! Today, I wanted to share a glimpse into our regenerative farming practices and introduce you to one of our finishing cattle, Jack Jr.
Sustainable Transitions: From Pig Paddock to Cattle Grazing
What you're seeing in today's farm update is a perfect example of our commitment to regenerative agriculture. This area was originally one of our very first pig paddocks, where our pigs did the natural work of helping us clear the land. After they completed their job, we carefully removed a few trees and planted grass to transform it into a grazing area for our finishing cattle.
Our Grass-Fed, Grain-Finish Approach
At R&B Rhyne Farms, we operate as a grass-fed, grain-finish operation. Our primary finishing lot has about 90% shade coverage, which means we don't get a good stand of grass there. That's why creating additional grazing areas like this one is so important to our process.
A couple of weeks ago, Farmer Rex was out on his tractor seeding this area. Now, we have a beautiful grazing space that provides Jack Jr. with fresh grass and more sunshine during his finishing stage. Since we typically finish one cow at a time, this space provides plenty of room for proper grass finishing.
Meet Jack Jr.
Jack Jr. is currently in his finishing stage and has absolutely loved getting out onto this fresh grass and enjoying more sunshine. He's a beauty, and as you can see in our video, his ears perked up when he heard Farmer Rex on the gator – probably thinking it was time for more food!
